Article: #1 on the Billboard in English... conflict arises in K-Pop "are domestic fans being neglected?"
Source: Joongang Ilbo via Naver
Article talks about the blurring of the lines in what makes K-Pop uniquely K-Pop as it begins to expand into other markets like BTS with 'Dynamite'. New songs are also becoming more 'English-focused' like Black Pink's new string of releases ('Ice Cream' only has two lines of Korean). SuperM, NCT127, Monsta X, and Stray Kidz have all released English albums as well.
With more focus being put on the international market, concern is being brought up by both international and domestic fans about the "loss of charm in what makes K-Pop uniquely K-Pop". Fans have expressed a yearning for K-Pop music that used to be choreography focused and Korean lyrics over English.
An expert reasoned that the Korean market is too small and limiting for further growth for K-Pop, and that what will likely happen is that the new wave of K-Pop releases will probably continue to include 2-3 English only songs while attempting to maintain the important elements of K-Pop such as choreography and visuals.
1. [+7,670, -180] I'm not seeing what the problem is
2. [+4,018, -143] And what what makes K-Pop unique? ㅋㅋㅋ This article sounds like it was written by a boomer. Isn't the ultimate goal of producing music to have it resonate with the entire world? You can write all the Korean lyrics you want but it frustrates me when I see people so opposed to international growth, it just feels hopeless, tsk tsk.
3. [+2,106, -47] Then what is the article proposing? That we stay stuck in our pond without making any advancements? BTS has worked hard all on their own to achieve all of this and yet our industry is trying to poke holes in their success when they never helped with anything to begin with. As BTS continues to grow, I'm sure there will come a day where American radios will play their Korean songs, but we're still in the process of getting there, so why not show them some support? Why let this end up like J-Pop where it's only listened to and enjoyed by J-Pop fans? Will BTS only receive praise if they stay obediently stuck in their ponds?
4. [+1,525, -49] Music itself is a language... I don't see a problem with this
5. [+874, -49] BTS just released a single. They will release an official album in their original style soon.
6. [+603, -12] I don't think you can accuse BTS of neglecting their domestic fans considering all of the free music they've released for us. I can understand feeling neglected if you're a fan of a group who hasn't released a domestic album in years and never communicated with their fans only to release an English song to promote but BTS is not that case... Please stop trying to poke holes in their success. They achieved this sweating blood and tears.
7. [+472, -15] I don't know what point the article is trying to make. BTS has always sang Korean songs and chose to release an English one to console the world during these difficult times. This feels like such a forced argument.
8. [+427, -7] BTS has released hundreds of songs in Korean but all because they released one English song to help their fans all over the world feel better because their tours are being cancelled over the virus, people are kicking up this fuss? What about all the other Korean songs, all the times they incorporated Korean dances and Korean outfits?
9. [+413, -11] ㅋㅋㅋ By this argument, are we neglecting King Sejong by learning English? ㅋㅋㅋ Are we losing what it means be uniquely Korean? ㅋㅋㅋ
10. [+308, -9] So all because they released 1 song out of 100 in English, they're now being accused of being a foreign group? What is this nonsense!!! They're still spreading Korean culture, what's it matter if it's being done in English or German? Please continue experimenting in various ways to spread our culture some more~~ I'm so proud of BTS as a Korean ^^
